Russian High School Curriculum Introduces Drone Training Amid Russia-Ukraine Conflict

In response to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, Russian high schools are implementing a new curriculum that teaches students aged 15 to 17 about military drones and their operation. This move comes as part of broader efforts to bolster patriotism and national security education in schools.

Drone Training and Countermeasures:

The Russian education ministry recently published a curriculum that includes a course on operating and countering military drones. Students will gain insights into the tactical applications of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in combat situations. Additionally, they will engage in practical tasks related to drone piloting and learn strategies to counter enemy drones.

Soviet-Style Military Training Reintroduction:

Last year, Russia announced plans to reintroduce Soviet-style military training for children in response to the conflict with Ukraine. Lawmaker Sergei Mironov emphasized that this program aims to systematically prepare citizens for potential confrontations with adversaries. The updated military curriculum extends beyond drones, covering topics such as handling Kalashnikov assault rifles, hand grenades, and marksmanship.

Patriotic Initiatives in Schools:

Russian authorities have initiated several measures to foster patriotism and national pride within schools. Schools are now required to play the national anthem and raise the flag at the beginning of each week. The curriculum also includes special classes referred to as "important conversations," where students are taught Russian values and the government's perspective on the Ukraine conflict.

Context of Drone Use in Conflict:

The introduction of drone training is particularly relevant as drones have become instrumental in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian territory have highlighted the strategic significance of these devices. Recently, a Ukrainian drone was shot down by Russian air defenses, causing parts to fall on a house in the Moscow region, resulting in injuries.

Impact on Aviation and Travel:

The use of drones in the conflict has disrupted regular activities, including air travel. The fallout of the destroyed drone led to disruptions in nearly 50 flights to and from Moscow's major airports, causing inconvenience to travelers and affecting the operation of key airports.
